S2E1 - Let's Not Label Eleanor - Crossover with Always the Last to Know!
In this episode of Sweet Baby Gay, we have a special crossover episode with the hosts of Always the Last to Know, Katy and Ashley. Together, we explore the life of one of the most iconic women in American history: Eleanor Roosevelt.
While Eleanor is celebrated for her political achievements and her role as First Lady, there is a lesser-known side to her story that we delve into: her possible relationships with women. We examine the evidence that suggests Eleanor was a sapphic woman, including her close relationship with journalist Lorena Hickok (Hick) and others.
However, we also acknowledge the complexity of labelling someone's sexuality without their explicit consent. While we cannot put a label onto Eleanor, we can look at the evidence and speculate what stories she could not tell.
As we trace Eleanor's life beyond her marriage to Franklin D. Roosevelt, we discuss her political activism and her creation of the Val-Kill cottage as a space for women to gather and work. We also reflect on the ways in which queer history is often erased or overlooked in mainstream narratives, and the importance of uncovering these hidden stories.
Tune in to this thought-provoking episode as we celebrate the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt and explore the nuances of sexuality and identity in history.
